For the past four years, I have managed to attend Firefly Music Festival located in Dover, DE. After every weekend of Firefly my love for the festival and Dover only grows. In 2015, my twin sister and I somehow convinced our parents to camp out for Firefly with us. The headliners that year included Paul McCartney, the Killers, and Kings of Leon. Throughout the weekend, our favorites included the energetic duo Matt & Kim and the the DJ set performance by Zedd. To this day, I can easily say those two music sets are probably the most fun and energetic sets I have ever experienced. Unfortunately, on Saturday night, after pushing my way forward to watch Kings of Leon in the front row, the set was cancelled due to severe thunderstorms rolling in. Despite that hiccup and the endless amount of mud throughout the festival, Firefly 2015 was one of the best weekends of the year (and probably my life) and could easily be considered one of the best years of Firefly.
In 2016, Erin and I attended Firefly again with friends, rather than spending our money to go to the beach during Senior Week. In 2016, the headliners included Mumford & Sons, Florence and the Machine, Kings of Leon, and DeadMau5. A little less muddy and little more different this year with hanging out with friends and a whole new Firefly vibe. Mumford & Sons are one of my favorite bands so I was especially excited to see them. Florence and the Machine was absolutely breathtaking and I was convinced by the end of her set that Florence is really just a fairy princess goddess. My dreams redeemed themselves because I was finally able to see Kings of Leon after they cancelled last year and they 100% exceeded my expectations. It was one of the best moments during the weekend.
In 2017, on a whim, Erin and I decided to attend Firefly together. After finding cheap last minute passes and skipping out on Thursday, it was just Erin and I this time around. The headliners this year included the Weeknd, Muse, twenty one pilots, Chance the Rapper, and Bob Dylan. Erin and I agreed that Firefly was definitely setting off a new vibe compared to the last two years with the presence of more mainstream music and a whole new crowd. Yet, Erin and I were just thankful and excited to get another taste of Firefly and our favorite late night mac & cheese food truck called Gouda Boys. We were especially excited to see Judah and the Lion as well as Bishop Briggs. Both artists and sets exceeded our expectations and you ever have the chance to see either one of them, I would definitely suggest.
In 2018, on another whip again, Erin and I attended Firefly again, but only on Sunday. After finding cheap one-day passes and somehow convincing my parents and Erin to hop on a plane to Philadelphia, Erin and I made it to the festival grounds yet again. The headliners for this year included Eminem, the Killers, Arctic Monkeys and Kendrick Lamar. Erin and I saw Kendrick Lamar on Sunday as well as Banners (a British version of The Bleachers), Alice Merton, Lord Huron, MGMT, Alt-J, SZA, and Odesza as the DJ set at the end of the night. Alice Merton was amazing and sounded better live than on the radio and Odesza was so much with the flying glow sticks and drum line. They were my favorites artists after reflecting on the day during the drive back home.
Hopefully, I'll see ya later Firefly Music Festival 2019! Watch out for more camping and turtles in the next blog post!
